Dark Hunger

I loved, loved, LOVED this book!  Before I go on and on about how great it was to read, I guess I should give you a little bit of background about the book.  This is the second book in the Bretheren series.  I really liked the first book, Dark Thirst, but it was so much back story and developing characters that it took a little bit more time to get through.  The first book introduces the reader to a group of vampires called the Bretheren.  They live on a secluded farm in Kentucky hiding behind the guise of horse breeding and a whiskey distillery.  The Elders are large and in charge and the family with the most male heirs are the big kahunas.  They are also the only ones who can leave the farm.  Augustus Noble is the Elder in charge and he is one mean cookie.  The first book revolves around Brandon Noble, Augustus' grandson.  As a young boy the Noble house-hold was robbed and Brandon was attacked.  He barely survived but the attack left him deaf and mute.  Brandon's father hired an outsider to come teach Brandon, a person who was also deaf and mute.  As Brandon got older he began to see how terrible his grandfather and the Elders were.  After having his hands broken because he tried to learn sign language and trying to go to a college for people like him, he decided to leave the farm.  He went to the only place he could think of, his old teacher's place.  To make a long story short, the book ends with Brandon and Lina (his teacher's sister) and Tessa (Brandon's twin sister) and Rene (Lina's former police partner who is also Bretheren) on the run and taking two separate cars to head to Lake Tahoe.

Dark Hunger (book 2) begins where Dark Thirst left off.  This time the book focuses on Rene and Tessa.  Rene thought he was the only vampire until he met Brandon.  Rene never knew his father until days before he killed himself.  As a police officer, Rene was shot in the knee-cap and the doctors amputated his leg, not knowing his Bretheren blood would have healed the wound.  Tessa escaped from the farm to find her twin and warn him the Elders were coming from him.  She was also escaping from her own personal hell.  Right after her bloodletting (ceremony where the Bretheren feed for the first time) she was married to Martin Davenant.  Martin was cruel and would beat Tessa.  At the time of the story she is also a few months pregnant.  The story is their journey to Lake Tahoe where they will meet up with Brandon and Lina.  They hit a lot of road bumps along the way but they soon become close and realize they would do anything to keep one another safe.  I absolutely loved this book until the end when they reach Lake Tahoe.  I'm not going to give away any more details.  It looks like there is a third book in the series so I will definitely be getting it and reading it.
